Ed Boon teased the next NetherRealm Studios game, and it seems like they are working on something huge. Boon claimed he would “get into a lot of trouble” for saying too much.
After being inducted into The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences’ hall of Fame (thanks to The Gamer), Boon spoke with Game Informer. Boon said about his past with Mortal Kombat, DC’s Injustice titles, and asked about the next title. Boon doesn’t reveal the name of this NetherRealm project, but he mentions breaking a pattern and hinting that it might not be Mortal Kombat12 or Injustice3.

Here’s Boon’s complete quote from the interview
There was much speculation about what we would do next when we broke the pattern. It was necessary and it will make sense when we announce the next game. If I say more, it will get me in serious trouble.”
Many speculate that this could be the Marvel fighting games. This would break the pattern Boon referred to since Mortal Kombat is Warner Bros. IP and Injustice is Warner Bros. IP. It will be interesting to see what the Marvel fighting game turns out to be, considering that Boon has not hinted at anything.
Mortal Kombat 11, the latest NetherRealm Studios game, is now available. It is known for PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S on the Nintendo Switch.
