Developers have been trying to make the gaming experience more accessible in recent years. However, Reddit SparkMyke posted a video (reposted to r/virtualreality by u/MementoMori) from one man who has revealed that it’s actually a VR headset gifted to him by developer Valve that helped wholeheartedly transform his life.
SparkMyke shared the VR clip, in which a man describes how his life has changed over the past two years. The Valve Index headset has helped the man with autism to find a new community and a place that “fits him”.
“I am 51 years old, so I’m probably the oldest person you can talk with here. He began. “I cannot leave my home very well. My brain isn’t compatible with the world outside, but here in virtual reality I can meet people and it just feels so cool.”
He continued, “Valve actually gave this to me.” “I have a very severe autism diagnosis and virtual reality allows my to be here. I have been working with Valve for around two years and I provide long-term since I use VR for six to eight hours per day.”
The man explained how his VR headset changed his life and said, “I can take off my headset and I’m back on the real world.” While the real world is a part of my safe zone, VR allows me to be anywhere and connect with anyone. This is especially important for autistic people who have social problems and can’t easily connect with others.
